Ryan, Who Retired 24 Years Ago, Succumbs To Illness At Age of 73 Martin J. Ryan, aged 73, who for many years served as chief of the Norfolk Fire Department and whose work in behalf of the firemen is recalled by many of the older residents of the city, died yesterday morning at 10:30 o'clock in an local hospital. Thirty-four years ago Mr. Ryan, then called foreman of Company No. 3, was made chief of the fire department. He demonstrated his ability as a fire fighter soon after his appointment, having directed the work of his men during the Jones-Lee Company's warehouse fire and later at the serious conflagration when St. Vincent's Hospital was destroyed in 1899. It was after the St. Vincent's fire that Chief Ryan led a fight to increase the strength of the department and add equipment for the men. He was succeeded in 1904 by Chief John H. Kegebein. A native of Ireland, Mr. Ryan had made his home in Norfolk for more than 50 years. At the time of his death he was foreman in the construction department of the City Gas Company. He was a member of Norfolk Lodge No. 38, B.P.O. Elks and of St. Mary's Catholic Chruch. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Kavanaugh Ryan; a daughter, Miss Elizabeth J. Ryan; two sons, William B. and Emmitt J. Ryan; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews, all of Norfolk. The body will be taken from the residence, 4804 Newport Avenue, to St. Mary's Catholic Church tomorrow morning at 10:30 o'clock. Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery. ************ RYAN, MARTIN J. - At a local hospital, Saturday, September 8, 1928, at 10:30 o’clock a.m., MARTIN J. RYAN, in the 74th year of his age. Remains will be taken from the residence, No. 4804 Newport avenue, Colonial Place, to St. Mary’s Catholic Church for funeral services MONDAY MORNING at 10:30 o'clock. Friends of the family are invited to attend. Interment in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
