Father John Vincent Ryan, one of the youngest Catholic priests in Virginia, died at 3:40 o’clock yesterday afternoon at St. Vincent’s Hospital. He had been in ill health for several years. Had he lived until June 14, Father Ryan would have celebrated the third anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. He was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Martin J. Ryan, of Norfolk, and until his health failed him, he showed every indication of making his mark in the vocation he had chosen for his life’s work. He had many friends and, by his kindly feeling for persons of all walks of life, he had won for himself the love and respect of all who knew him. When stricken ill, Father Ryan bore his suffering with fortitude and up until a few weeks ago, when he was obliged to take to his bed, he continued to perform the duties of his calling. He comforted the sick and the poor by his kindly words while he himself was suffering from an illness for which his physicians said there was little hope of a cure. Father Ryan was 29 years old and was ordained a priest in the Baltimore cathedral on June 14, 1924, by Bishop Curley. Two other Norfolk boys were ordained at the same time, they being the Rev. Fathers Julian F. Bullock and Edward Johnson. All three of the young priests came to Norfolk and on June 15, they celebrated their first mass in this city. Father Ryan said his first mass in St. Mary’s Church and that edifice was filled with his friends and friends of his family. Soon after his ordination, Father Ryan was sent to Lynchburg as assistant pastor of Holy Cross Church in that city. He served about six months at this church and was obliged to give up his duties on account of ill health. He came to Norfolk and, up until a short time ago, had no regular charge, but said mass daily in one of the Catholic churches here. He received his grammar school education at St. Mary’s Male Academy, this city, and from there went to St. Charles College at Baltimore and later to St. Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore, where he took up his studies for the priesthood. Just a few weeks ago he was made one of the assistants of St. Mary’s Church and again his health failed him. He was sent to St. Vincent’s Hospital and remained there until the hour of his death yesterday afternoon. Father Ryan is survived by his mother and father and the following brothers and sisters: William B. and Emmett J. Ryan and Mrs. J. F. Gallilee and Miss Elizabeth J. Evan, all of Norfolk. Arrangements for the funeral had not been completed last night and will be announced later.
