Mr. Salazar was born in San Juan, Rizal, Philippines. He retired from the Navy after 20 years and was a member of the U.S. Chess Federation, Virginia Chess Federation and the Fleet Reserve Association. He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and was a Catholic. Survivors include his wife, Loretta B. Salazar; a daughter, Rowena Salazar of the Philippines; a stepdaughter, Katrina Merrell, and a stepson, Joseph Merrell III, both of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Remy Fernandez of San Francisco, Calif., and Maria Salazar of Daly City, Calif.; three brothers, Fred Salazar of Daly City, Frank Salazar of Pleasanton, Calif., and Rudy Salazar of Vallejo, Calif.; two step-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday in St. Mary's Cemetery with military honors by the Rev. Joseph P. Lehman. The family will receive friends at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. today. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
