SALE SUCCUMBS TO DEATH NORFOLK'S NOTED POLITICIAN PASSED AWAY LAST NIGHT, AFTER WEEKS ILLNESS - PARALYSIS CAUSE OF HIS DEMISE Benjamin P. Sale died yesterday afternoon at the residence of his son-in-law, Joseph C. Prince, 199 Bank street, as the result of a stroke of paralysis. The funeral will take place Tuesday morning at 9 o’clock. Mr. Sale was 61 years old last month. He leaves four children — Mrs. J. C. Prince, Mrs. C. M. C. Doran, Miss Mollie Sale and W. Harry Sale. Mr. Sale was one of the best known men in the city and he was for many years closely identified with the politics of Norfolk, although he never held public office. He had devoted much time and a considerable amount of money to further the interests of the democratic party, and, in Norfolk’s earlier days, he was aggressive in fighting for democratic supremacy. His friends claim hat he did as much if not more than any man in Norfolk to bring the city back into the democratic column after the dark and trying days of reconstruction. It is told of Mr. Sale that he gave thousands of dollars to charity, but always shrunk from the public prints when lending a helping hand to the poor. Fifteen years ago Mr. Sale operated no less than a dozen cafes in the city. He was the proprietor of Sale's hotel, in old Market square, and, with an associate, operated the first hansom cab in the city. He at one time owned considerable property in the down-town section and also several farms. Mr. Sale was born in Norfolk. SALE - At the residence of his son-in-law, Joseph C.
