Salopek, 78, of the 800 block of Five Point Road, died Dec. 24, 2002. A native of Duquesne, Pa., Mr. Salopek had retired from the U.S. Navy in 1972 as a boatswain mate senior chief, serving in World War II and the Korean War. He also retired from the City of Virginia Beach as a utilities inspector in 1982. Mr. Salopek was a member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. He was a former member of the Knights of Columbus. Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Gloria Knapp Salopek; three sons, Gregory T. Salopek and his wife Kathryn of Norfolk, Daniel P. Salopek and his wife Kim of Prince George, Va. and Eric J. Salopek and his wife Lisa of Palmyra, Va.; two daughters, Carolyn Sanford and her husband Tab of Chesapeake and Annette Ryan of Virginia Beach; 10 grandchildren; and a brother, Robert Salopek of Duquesne. A funeral Mass will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Interment will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Norfolk. A Christian Wake will be held today at 6 p.m. at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Laskin Road Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to St. Gregory the Great Building Fund or a charity of choice.
