The Norfolk Virginian, July 31, 1897

The last sad rites over the remains of Mrs. Mattie M. Sams, the beloved wife of 
Mrs. C. Whittle Sams, took place at the residence of her husband, No. 122 Boush 
Street at 5:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. The funeral services were conducted 
by Rev. Dr. Beverly D. Tucker, rector of St. Paul’s P.E. Church, and the 
remains were laid to rest in Elmwood Cemetery.
