Sylvester Hill's old bottling establishment last night at 9:30 o'clock. The ball entered his right breast and death resulted ten minutes later. The fatal shot was said to have been fired by Robert Johnson, colored. The cause of the shooting is alleged to have been due to a quarrel which occurred in W.H. Lane's bar room between Walter Findlay and this negro Johnson. Sanford sided with Findlay. The disturbance was quieted and Findlay, Sanford and an older brother, Gert Sanford, went to the house in front of which he was shot, which Capt. John Atkinson, a clerk in Lane's store, used as a sleeping apartment. A few minutes later Johnson and Sam Freeman, colored, went to the place and demanded that they discontinue the noise which it seems they were making, using vile language, whereupon the trio came out of the house. Findlay and James Sanford lock-armed with Gert Sanford a few steps in the rear. When a short distance from the building the shot that caused Sanford's death was fired. Justice Tillotson was notified and summoned the following jury. Joseph Litchfield, D.D. Duxburg, C, Girand, J.B. McCloud, W.A. Wilson and B. Phillips. The following witnesses were examined: Walter Findlay, Gert Sanford, Robert Johnson. After hearing the evidence Justice Tillotson adjourned the jury until Monday evening at 7:30 o'clock in Justice Tillotson's office. Robert Johnson, the negro charged with the shooting, was arrested and placed in the lock-up James Sanford is the youngest son of Mrs. Sarah Sanford, Seaboard avenue, South Norfolk, and has two sisters and three brothers.
