He had been in failing health the last several years. For many years, until his retirement in 1931, he owned and operated the Sansone Fruit Co., a wholesale and retail concern, on East Main street. He was, in fact, a vegetarian, rarely eating meat. A native of Termini, Sicily (Italy), he had resided in Norfolk for 70 years, lately at 315 W. 29th St. His parents were August and Mrs. Salvatore Sansone. Happy On Birthday
On his 98th birthday, although age had dimmed his sight, he was
happy receiving gifts, telling stories, and singing his favorite
song, “0 Sole Mio,” when his
daughters gathered at the residence. Sansone loved to recall his youth and the adventures he had while serving in the Italian army. Although he had about lost his sight, he retained all his own teeth — a fact that earned him a spot in Ripley's Believe It or Not — and thick, white hair. After his wife, Mrs. Anna Sansone, died in 1931, he retired from business. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Surviving are three sons, August Sansone of Norfolk; Joseph S. Sansone and Louis A. Sansone, both of Syracuse, N.Y.; six daughters, Mrs. A. H. Bisese, Mrs. Vinci Amato Purifoy, Mrs. Joseph Scalco Sr., Mrs. Eugene Caligari Jr., Mrs. Charles W. Varley and Mrs. Angeline S. Harris, all of Norfolk; 22 grandchildren; 37 great- grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, and a number of nieces and nephews. The body was removed to the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, pending completion of funeral arrangements. The family will assemble at 3664 Riverside Dr. File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/va/norfolkcity/obits/s/sansone4784nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/vafiles/ File size: 2.4 Kb
