A popular native of Norfolk, he was the husband of Mrs. Alla Archer Saunders and a son of the late Charles Wesley Saunders Sr. and Mrs. Mamie Harrell Saunders. He worked for Virginia Cleaners and was a member of First Baptist Church, Bute street. Besides his widow, surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Delois Mercer, and a sister, Mrs. Sadie Johnson, both of Norfolk; and two grandchildren. Dapper and friendly, Mr. Saunders was for many years a familiar figure in the uptown community. A long-time acquaintance sums it up this way: “Everybody knew Jim Saunders…” A funeral service was held in Queen Street Baptist Church by Dr. J. Jasper Freeman. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery with Graves Funeral Home in charge.
