Sawyer, 72, of 719 Michigan Avenue, Colonial Place, a justice of the peace here since 1932, and a Methodist layman, died yesterday at 4 a.m. in a Norfolk hospital. In failing health for some months, he entered the hospital Tuesday. A native of Weeksville, N.C., he had lived in Norfolk the last 50 years. His parents were Clifton P. and Mrs. Lina Mead Sawyer. He was a member of the Park Place Methodist Church and a member of its board of stewards. A member of the Men's Wesley Bible Class of the church, he had been State president of the Bible Class Association for the Children's Home at Richmond. He also was active in fraternal circles locally, being a member of Ruth Lodge No. 89, A.F. & A.M., Norfolk United Royal Arch Chapter No. 1, Grice Commandery No. 16, Knights Templar, and Khedive Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Dalby Sawyer; two sisters, Mrs. M.W. Lister, of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Mrs. Kathryn Morris, of Washington; two brothers, Clifton P. Sawyer, of Elizabeth City, N.C., and Hunter Sawyer, of New York City. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 2 p.m. at the Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.
