Mrs. Sarah Sykes Sawyer, 103, one of the area's oldest residents, died Sunday evening in the home of a granddaughter, Mrs. Henry Wood, after a brief illness. A native of Norfolk County, Va., she lived here since 1958. She formerly lived at 1710 Montclair Ave., Campostella. She was the widow of Cornelius Sawyer and a daughter of Thomas W. and Mrs. Frances Kilgore Sykes Sr. She was the oldest member of Ahoskie United Methodist Church. Surviving, besides Mrs. Wood, are another granddaughter, Mrs. Leroy Pate of Tampa, Fla.; two grandsons, Francis Sawyer of the Marine Corps, California, and Wesley Sawyer of Washington; 12 great grandchildren; and two great-great- grandchildren. A funeral service will be held today at 11 a.m. in Garrett Funeral Home by the Rev. Worth Cotton. A committal service will be held at 2:30 p.m. today in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk.
