A native of Hampton, she was the widow of James H. Sawyer and a daughter of William Edwin and Mrs. Rosa Lester Porter. She was a member of Dora Billips Missionary Circle of First Baptist Church, Bute Street, a past matron of Ada Eastern Star Chapter 20, and a member of Ladies Auxiliary to the order of the Golden circle Consistory. Surviving are three nephews, Clarence Holmes, Odell Holmes, and Ernest Holmes of Norfolk, and five nieces, Mrs. Sue Banks of Hampton, Mrs. Lena Chisman, Mrs. Jeanette Penebaker, Mrs. Lillian Smith, and Mrs. Ellen Wilson of New York. A funeral service will be held Friday at 1:30 p.m. in First Baptist Church, Bute Street, by the Rev. E. Paul Simms. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery with E.A. Hughes Funeral Home in charge. The body will be in church at noon Friday.
