 Norfolk Virginian Pilot Wednesday October 9, 1940
Rufus Lee Sawyer, aged 49, died at a local hospital yesterday morning at 
7:45 o’clock after a long illness. He was a native of Camden County, N.C., 
and had been a resident of Norfolk 40 years. He was the son of the late 
Elijah R. and Mollie Sykes Sawyer. Mr. Sawyer was a member of Old Zion 
Christian Church. Surviving him are a sister, Mrs. Maggie Berry, Elizabeth 
City, N.C.; two brothers, J.B. Sawyer, of Norfolk, and J.J. Sawyer, of 
Greensboro, N.C., and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday afternoon at 3:30 o’clock in 
the funeral chapel of James V. Derry, Colley and Harrington Avenues. The 
Rev. H.E. Crutchfield, pastor of Old Zion Christian Church will officiate. 
Burial will be in Cedar Grove Cemetery.
