DEATH OF THE VICE-CONSUL OF FRANCE.

It is our sad duty to record this morning the death of Leon Schisano, Esq., French 
Vice-Consul of this port, which occurred yesterday morning at 3 o’clock. Mr. 
Schisano was the son of the late Pascal Schisano, so long and so well known and so 
generally beloved in our community, and who so worthily filled the position of 
French Consul here for many years. His son, Leon, was appointed in his place, and 
has ever since performed the duties of the Consulship.

The deceased was a gentleman of noble qualities of head and heart, which endeared 
him to all who enjoyed the pleasure of his friendship.

He was peculiarly fitted for the responsi­ble post be held, and his talents were 
duly appreciated by bis government. A notable instance of his fearless devotion to 
duty was afforded in 1869, when he passed sev­eral days on board a French national 
ves­sel at quarantine, that had on board many cases of virulent yellow fever. In 
recogni­tion of his services, the Emperor sent him a magnificent gold watch, and 
bestowed upon him the gold medal of the Legion of Honor.

It is believed that the misfortunes of France so preyed upon Mr. Schisano’s 
spirits that his frame, naturally delicate, gave way, and our community has thus 
been deprived of one of its most valued citizens and one of the best of men. May 
he rest in peace, and may our Heavenly Father soothe the affliction of a desolated 
home, in which a devoted mother and sis­ter have been deprived of him who was
their only earthly stay.
