CORONER ASCRIBES SCHMITT DEATH TO SELF-FIRED BULLET

FINDS COLLEGE STUDENT'S DEMISE DUE TO "UNAVOIDABLE ACCIDENT"

The official coroner's report yesterday certified that William H. Schmitt died of 
self-inflicted wounds following the shooting of his wife Friday night, September 
16.  Schmitt died almost immediately after the shooting at 309 West Indian River 
road and was dead when Detective Leon Nowitzky, official coroner's investigator, 
reached St. Vincent's Hospital, where the man and his wife had been taken.

The official report, made by Dr. C. D. J. Macdonald, city coroner, reads: "William 
H. Schmitt, aged 42, died September 16, at 8 p.m. at St. Vincent's Hospital of 
intra-cranial hemorrhage, following a pistol shot wound in the jaw.  The wound was 
self-inflicted and it was a plain case of suicide."

WILLIAM H. SCHMITT - Funeral services for Mr. Schmitt were conducted yesterday 
morning at 10:30 o’clock at H. D. Oliver's Funeral Apartments, Freemason street.  
The Rev. F. Joseph Magri, pastor of St. Paul’s Catholic Church, Portsmouth, 
officiated. There was a large attendance and many floral offerings. The casket was 
covered with clusters of pink and white dah­lias. Burial was in St. Mary’s 
Cemetery. The pallbearers were J. B. Brockett, W. C. Alley, W. J. Cahoon, L. E. 
Jackson, J. F. W. Fawcett and W. A. Edwards, all members of Goldenrod Camp, 11727, 
Modern Woodmen of America.
