Virginian-Pilot  December 31, 1909
Rev. Father Francis A. Schmitz, who has been chaplain at the St. Vincent’s 
Hospital, this city, for seven years, died at that institution yesterday after a 
lingering illness, aged 42 years. The deceased was a native of Germany.

For many years prior to his making his home in Norfolk, Father Schmitz was 
actively engaged in mission work in North and South Carolina.

In his last home, Norfolk, he was uni­versally esteemed for the many Chris­tian 
traits that adorned his character and was greatly beloved by all con­nected with 
St. Vincent’s Hospital's work. The time and place of his fu­neral are yet to be 
announced.
