Scott, 81, of 3515 Hale St., chauffeur, gardener, and handyman for Lawyer Robert M. Hughes Jr. family, died Thursday after a heart attack suffered in his car. A native of Norfolk, he had worked for 55 years with the Hughes family, having been hired by Robert M. Hughes Sr., a lawyer, after World War 1. He officially retired in 1965 but continued to work as a gardener for the family on a part time basis. He was the husband of Mrs. Mary Scott, whom he married in 1918. He was a member of St. John AME Church, where he was a steward, chairman of the prayer meeting, member of the B. F. Lee Sunday School class and Laymen League. He was a member of Arabia Shrine Temple, Portsmouth, of which he was a past potentate, member of Commisory 9, and a past master of Rayfield Masonic Lodge. He was a past patron of Margaret Frances Eastern Star Chapter 101, member of the NAACP, and Hunton YMCA Branch. A funeral service will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in St. John AME Church by the Rev. A. R. Powell. Burial, with military honors, will be in Calvary Cemetery. Graves Funeral Home has charge. The body will be in the church at 11 a.m. Monday.
