SCRIBNER IS DEAD; AGED 76 Former Policeman Served the City in 1873 Under Chief Benson ONCE LAMPBOY IN OLD HOPE FIRE DEPARTMENT John E. Scribner, Norfolk police­ man during the stormy days of the reconstruction following the Civil War, died yesterday afternoon at 2:45 o'clock at the residence of his son, R. L. Scribner, 112 West Sixteenth street. He was 76 years old. Mr. Scribner entered thy city police department as second sergeant in 1873 and served during the regime of C. C. Benson, chief of police. Prior to entering the police department, he served as a lampboy in the old Hope Fire Department of Norfolk. He was a native of Norfolk, as were his father and mother before him, and resided in this city all his life. Leav­ing the police force in 1881, Mr. Scribner entered the employ of A. Wrenn & Sons, with which concern he remained until his retirement from business several years ago. Surviving him are a son, R. L. Scribner; a daughter, Mrs. Charles Quinn, and five grandchildren. Fu­neral services will be held at the residence of R. L. Scribner tomorrow morning at 10:30 o'clock. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery.
