James Walter Selden, Negro, a native of Norfolk, who for many years has cooked for the president of the Southern Pacific Railroad, died Thursday at his home in El Paso, Tex. after a short illness. Before he left Norfolk in the 1920s Selden worked for the James G. Gill Company, coffee importers and roasters and was known affectionately as "De Byrd." Surviving are his wife, Wilhemenia Selden, of El Paso; four sisters and two brothers, all of Norfolk. The body will arrive here Tuesday and will be taken to the King Funeral Home on Church Street. Funeral services will be conducted Friday at the First Baptist Church on East Bute Street by the pastor, the Rev. R.W. Bowling. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery.
