Selden, local postal employee, and herself a prominent civic and church worker, died at her home, 860 Avenue A, Monday night, April 12, at 7 o’clock. Mrs. Selden’s death followed 25 years of ill-health during which time she had undergone eight operations in addition to two separate periods of hospital treatment. Her funeral will be conducted at the First Baptist church, where she held membership, Sunday afternoon, April 18, at one o’clock. The Rev. H. W. Bowling, the pastor, will officiate. The deceased was born in Southern Pines, NC, the daughter of John and Mrs. Elvia Parker, now of Rockingham County, NC. She received her early education at her native home and later attended school in Springfield, MA. Mrs. Selden became the wife of her bereaved husband in December 1917, in Hartford CT, and immediately thereafter came to his native home, Norfolk, to live with him. A son, Wiley Jr. was born to the couple in 1919. In spite of Mrs. Selden’s frailty, she found time to exert herself in church and civic work. She had been a teacher of the First Baptist Sunday school and associated herself with YWCA and Girl Scout activities. In addition, because of her capability as a maker of fine pastries, Mrs. Selden’s counsel had been sought for weddings, dinner parties and the like. In 1920 she was the winner of first prize in a Journal and Guide biscuit baking contest, and had been the recipient of three prizes awarded by the Virginia Electric and Power Company in baking contests. Colored Fairs and cooking school events generally sought her advice.
