A native of Norfolk and the son of the late John and Sallie Selden Sr., he was a retired medical doctor and general practitioner in private practice for over 46 years. He was devoted member of First United Presbyterian Church, where he served as a trustee for a number of years. In addition to managing a thriving medical practice, Dr. Selden also devoted his time to a number of community activities and was active in several clubs and organizations. Among them are: The Aeolian Social Club, Alpha Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, the Kit Kat Club Inc., the Gardsman Inc., and the Metro Anglers of Norfolk. Dr. Selden also served on the boards of Lake Taylor and Norfolk Community Hospitals. He was affiliated with the local, state and National Medical Association, the American Medical Associating and served as president of the State Medical Association. Dr. Selden also served as captain of the Army Medical Corps from 1952 to 1955. Dr. Selden is survived by a loving wife of over 51 years, Mrs. Gloria Smith Selden; two sons, Dr. John S. Selden III of Fort Washington, Md., Rodney K. Selden Sr. of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Marguerite Long of Petersburg, Va., Lilla Midgette of Washington, D.C.; grandchildren, John S. Selden IV, Gabriele Selden, Robney Selden Jr., Christopher Selden, Ginger Selden, Jeremy J. Selden and a great-grandchild, Kirstie Selden; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and devoted friends. A funeral will be conducted at noon Wednesday in First United Presbyterian Church, 745 E. 29th St., Norfolk, by the Rev. Ditawa Nianda. Viewing will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. A wake service will be held from 6 to 7 p.m. with a memorial service by the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. Dr. Selden's remains will be placed in church at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Riddick Funeral Service is handling arrangements.
