NORFOLK - William Lewis Selden Jr., 87, of the 800 block of A Avenue, passed 
quietly and gently into eternal rest March 25, 2003, at his residence. A native 
of Norfolk, he was the son of the late William L. Sr. and Mary Branch Selden. He 
was the husband of Mildred A. Selden.
Mr. Selden retired from Norfolk and Western Railway as a pullman porter. He also 
worked as a clerk for several years at Henderson's News Stand formerly on Granby 
Street. He was a member of First Baptist Church Bute Street where in early years 
he served as an usher and choir member.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of more than 60 years, Mildred A. 
Selden of the home; two daughters, Carolyn A. Walker and husband, Arthur, Joyce 
D. Alston-Daniel and husband, James; three sons, William Lewis Selden III, 
Robert A. Selden and wife, Edna and Thomas C. Selden. He will also be sorely 
missed by a sister, Mary S. Long; nine grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. 
He was predeceased by a son, Christopher B. Selden.
A funeral will be conducted Friday at noon at First Baptist Bute Street, 418 E. 
Bute St. with the Rev. Dr. Robert G. Murray officiating. Burial will be in 
Calvary Cemetery. Viewing will be today from 2 to 8 p.m. at Riddick Funeral 
Service. The body will be placed in the church at 10:30 a.m. Friday. The family 
will be at the residence.
