Sembly, who died Sept. 6 at her residence, 1360 Fulton street, after a sudden illness, were held at the Wesley Union AME Zion Church, Johnson avenue, with the pastor, Rev. J. R. Phillips, officiating. Mrs. Sembly, who had been a member of Wesley Union for 21 years, was church clerk, president of the stewardess board, secretary of the missionary society, and a teacher in the Sunday school. A native of Raleigh, NC, Mrs. Sembly came to Norfolk over 45 years ago. The former Miss Mary Helen Hunter, she married George H. Sembly in 1915 in Baltimore,MD, at which time she was working in Annapolis, MD. They have one son, Ralph Sembly, operator of a Church street establishment. Young Sembly, a 1936 graduate of Booker T. Washington High School, is well known in athletic circles. Besides her husband and son, she is survived by a brother, Josh Hunter of Norfolk; grandson, Ralph Sembly Jr., and two nieces, Mrs. Elizabeth Gee of Norfolk and Miss Lindsey of Annapolis MD. Mrs. Sembly held membership in Garrett’s Community Church before joining Wesley Union. She was a charter member of the Ideal Lodge of I. B. P. O. Buffaloes of World; and was chairman of the sick committee of the Supreme Grand Lodge of the Sons and Daughters of North Carolina. Interment was made in Calvary Cemetery with Hale Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
