He was the husband of Mrs. Hazel Robinson Shafer and son of Charles A. and Mrs. Margaret Savage Shafer. He was a member of Larchmont Methodist Church and past president of its George A. Peak Bible Class, member of Elizabeth Masonic Lodge 34, Norfolk United Royal Arch Chapter 1, Grice Commandery 16, Knights Templar, and Khedive Temple of the Shrine. Besides his widow, surviving are a son, Garfield Shafer Jr., of Chesapeake; two sisters, Mrs. George B. Halstead of Princeton, W.Va., and Mrs. L.P. Roberts Jr. of Norfolk; two granddaughters and a great-grandson. The body was taken from H.D. Oliver’s Funeral Apartments to Elmwood Cemetery for a funeral service Wednesday at 2 p.m. Masonic rites also will be accorded at the grave. The family has requested that flowers be omitted.
