 Dies Instantly From
Wound In Right Temple Gordon Cosmus Shaffer, aged 53, head of the Virginia Engraving Company, shot himself through the right temple yesterday morning in his apartment at 248 Ainsworth street, according to a police report, dying instantly. His act was attributed to ill health, according to the report of Coroner's investigator, Leon Nowitsky, and City Coroner C. D. J. Macdonald stated that no inquest will be held. Mr. Shaffer walked into the bedroom of J. M. McCloud, who has had a room with the Shaffers for several years, about 6:45 o'clock, the police report stated. Mr. McCloud was asleep. He was awakened by the report of a pistol to find Mr. Shaffer, who apparently had been standing in front of the mirror when the shot was fired, dead on the floor, the report said. Mr. Shaffer was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk and was active in Catholic action work here. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, and of the Fourth Degree, Knights of Columbus. He was a son of the late Jacob Louis and Mrs. Elizabeth Myers Shaffer. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Edith Chase Shaffer, one brother, Jacob L. Shaffer, Jr.; one sister, Mrs. Arthur B. Dozier, and a number of nieces and nephews. Rosary services will be conducted at H. D.
