Blanche Anne Saunders Shannon, 91, of the 6400 block of Newport Ave., died Dec. 7, 
2003, in a Norfolk hospital. She was a native and lifelong resident of Norfolk. 
She was the widow of Joseph Martin Shannon. Mrs. Shannon was a former employee of 
the City of Portsmouth and the Norfolk City School Board and The Catholic Diocese 
of Virginia as a registered nurse and school teacher. She was a member of Blessed 
Sacrament Catholic Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Susan Gately Shannon Layton of Norfolk; her son, 
Joseph Terry Shannon of Portsmouth; her brother, William Terry Saunders Jr. of 
Roaring Gap, N.C.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren

The funeral Mass will be held in Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, Wednesday at 
11 a.m. by Father Joseph H. Metzger III. Burial will be in St. Marys Catholic 
Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at H.D. Oliver Funeral Apts., Norfolk Chapel, 
today from 7 to 8 p.m. Memorial donations may be made to St. Mary's Infant Home.
