Shell, 87, of the 6400 block of Sedgefield Drive, went to be with her Lord on March 16, 1998, at her residence. She was a native of Winfall, N.C., the daughter of the late Theophilus and Mattie Boyce and the widow of the late John W. Shell. She was predeceased by a daughter, Vivian Shell; a sister, Hazel Modlin; and a brother, Herbert Boyce of Winfall, N.C. Mrs. Shell was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church and served as an organist for the Sunday School orchestra, junior choir and the men's chorus. For 27 years, she served as organist for the senior choir. She taught Sunday School for more than 50 years. The Shell Bible class was named in her honor. In working with the youth of the church, Mrs. Shell taught Bible School and directed pageants. For many years, she worked as a seamstress. Other affiliations include serving as secretary of the Coronado Civil League and the True Love Tent No. 37, United Order of Tents. Survivors include a daughter, Lorna S. Bouldin of Norfolk; three grandsons, Bernardo L. Bouldin Jr., Vincent T. Bouldin and his wife, Letitia, of Virginia Beach, Dr. John W. Bouldin and wife, Lisa, of Manassas, Va.; a brother-in-law, Earl Shell Jr. of Richmond; a son-in-law, Bernardo L. Bouldin Sr. of Norfolk; two great-granddaughters, Alexis and Chelsea; a great-grandson, Bradley; a goddaughter, retired Major Ercelle Drayton of Detroit, Mich.; a special daughter, Candy; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and loving friends. A home-going celebration will be conducted at noon Saturday in Shiloh Baptist Church, Norfolk, by Dr. John H. Foster. The body will be placed in the church at 10 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Hale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. The family will receive friends at 6419 Sedgefield Drive. A wake will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. Friday in the funeral home.
