Alberta was born March 12, 1901, at ``Oakland'' in Albemarle County, seven miles west of Charlottesville, Va., second child of Edward Thomas and Alberta Coiner Rodes. She was educated by her mother at home until she entered public school in the third grade. After graduating from Greenwood High School, she went to Harrisonburg Teacher's College, now James Madison University, and received a B.S. degree in Home Economics. She taught at Woodrow Wilson High School in Portsmouth until her marriage to Berkley Walter Shelton Jr. in 1928. She made her home on the family farm at ``Shelton Station'' in Princess Anne County, now the city of Virginia Beach. She joined Haygood United Methodist Church and served as youth counselor, choir member, president of UMW, member of the Board of Stewards, youth Sunday school teacher, and chair of the Parsonage Committee. As chair of the Altar Guild, she furnished and arranged flowers over a period of many years. She was the oldest member of Haygood Church. She was active in the community as secretary and president of the Bayside Elementary School PTA, member of Women For Better Government, Princess Anne Woman's Club, Princess Anne Book Club, and Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a gifted needle-woman and artisan, producing many needlepoint pieces, enjoyed reading, gardening and flower arranging. She is fondly remembered for her ham biscuits and aprons made for the church bazaars. She is survived by her only daughter, Alberta Shelton Stornetta of Annapolis, Md.; four grandchildren, Ruth Stornetta Friend of Charlottesville, Va., Mary Beth Stornetta Gale of Wakefield, R.I., W. Scott Stornetta Jr. of Morristown, N.J., and David Walter Stornetta of Annapolis; and five great-grandchildren. A fifth grandchild, Mary Alberta ``IV'' Stornetta died in November, 1999. Her husband, Berkley Walter Shelton Jr., died in 1953. She was also preceded in death by one brother, Thomas William Rodes, and four sisters, Ruth Rodes Culpepper, Clotilde Rodes Ballard, Dorothy Rodes Holden and Mary Betty Rodes. A graveside service at Elmwood Cemetery will be private, followed by a memorial service at Haygood United Methodist Church at 2 p.m. Friday by the Rev. W. Michael Nobles Sr. Family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel.
