Shepherd - It was a sad piece of information that gave notice yesterday morning of the death of Dr. William H. Shepherd, which took place at his residence. No. 252 East Main street, at 10 o’clock. Dr. Shepherd was taken suddenly ill Friday afternoon, and in spite of everything that medical science could do for him he did not rally and died as before stated. At his bedside when he died, in addition to his family, were Drs. W. A. Thom, Jr., E. E. Field, J. G. Riddick, H. T. Hunter and James Parrish. Dr. Shepherd was born in Albemarle county in this State, October 11th, 1840. He was graduated from the Medical College of Virginia March 11th, 1860. He enlisted in Company B., Albemarle Rifles, 19th Virginia Regiment April 9th, 1861, and served as private and first sergeant until wounded at Gaines’ Mill, June 27th, 1862. He was then transferred to the Medical Department of the army and performed general medical service until the close of the war, when he resumed the practice of his profession in his native county. He did not remain there long, but came to Norfolk and on the 5th of July, 1871, he was elected a member of the Medical Society here and in 1878 he became a fellowmember of the Medical Society of Virginia. During the twenty years of his residence in this city, Dr. Shepherd, in addition to establishing a lucrative practice, was elected to fill several offices of trust in the municipal government, he being at one time Physician to the Almshouse, and for many years a member and treasurer of the Board of Health. He was a member of Norfolk Lodge No. 38, B. P. O. Elks, and was at one time a lieutenant commander of Pickett-Buchanan Camp of Confederate Veterans, and at the time of his death was the chief surgeon of the Camp. Both of these organizations are called to attend his funeral, which will take place from Bt. Mary’s Catholic Church Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Dr. Shepherd was a gentleman of great intellectual ability and professional attainments, and the sterling traits of character which he possessed won for him many friends that he retained to the time of his death, and his loss will be long felt in the community where his deeds of charity were numerous and always bestowed with a readiness that spoke the generous heart that he possessed. Always a courteous gentleman, he was easily approached and ever ready to give such information as lay in his power. At a late hour last Saturday morning, he was at the scene of the big fire in the rear of the Custom-house, and when approached by one of the firemen and asked why he was out in such a storm, he replied that he was afraid that some of the boys might get hurt and he did not want to see them without attention. This is only one of the many kindly actions by which he so endeared himself to the hearts of many of our citizens who will long lament his loss. Dr. Shepherd was twice married, the
first time to a Miss Moon, of Georgia,
and as a result of this marriage there is
one child still alive. His second wife
was Miss Lena Pope, a niece of Mr. P.
H. Masi, of this city, and she, with
three children, remain to mourn his
death, and to whom the deepest sympa
thies of the community have gone out. A called meeting of the Medical Society of this city was held last evening, with the president, Dr. E. E. Field, in the chair. The president, after stating the object of the meeting, appointed Drs. L. B. Anderson, R. D. Bagnall and H. M. Nash to draft suitable resolutions, expressing the deep regret of the society at the loss it had sustained in the death of Dr. Shepherd.
