NORFOLK - Alma B. Shevlin, 83, went to be with the Lord April 15, 2008. She was 
born in Petersburg, Va., April 19, 1924, to the late Earl and Thelma Bowman. Alma 
was a longtime member of Christ the King Catholic Church, where she was a Girl 
Scout leader and helped on the staff. She was a member of Beta Sigma Phi in 
Norfolk and Hopewell and was named Outstanding Girl of the Year in Hopewell in 
1954. In her spare time, Alma enjoyed working in her garden.

Left to cherish her memory are her loving husband of 61 years, John V. Shevlin 
Jr.; two sons, Thomas Lee Shevlin and wife Mary Ellen of St. Petersburg, Fla., and 
Robert Vincent Shevlin and wife Nancy of Portsmouth; two daughters, Maureen Oliver 
of Virginia Beach and Kathleen Marie Shevlin of Portsmouth; sister, Mildred Sadler 
and husband Everett of Colonial Heights; and four grandchildren, Travis Oliver, 
Elizabeth Oliver, Matthew Shevlin and Katherine Shevlin.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Christ the King 
Catholic Church, conducted by Father Brian Rafferty. Burial will follow in St. 
Mary's Catholic Cemetery. The family will receive friends today from 6 to 8 p.m. 
at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorial 
contributions may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church. To celebrate the
