He was born in Brooklyn, NY on February 24, 1924. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Alice Shevlin, his brother Frank and his wife of 61 years, Alma Bowman Shevlin. Left to cherish his memory are two sons, Thomas Lee Shevlin and his wife Mary Ellen of St. Petersburg FL, and Robert Vincent Shevlin and wife Nancy of Portsmouth; two daughters, Maureen Elizabeth Oliver of Virginia Beach, and Kathleen Marie Shevlin of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Travis Oliver, Elizabeth Oliver Lowe, Katherine Shevlin, Matthew Shevlin; four great grandchildren, Levi Lowe, Darcy Lowe, Jason Kronenberger and Bella Shevlin; and a sister-in-law Mildred Sadler of Colonial Heights, VA. John served in the US Army during WW2 and received an Honorable Discharge with the rank of Technician Fourth Grade, T/4. He belonged to the Hopewell, VA Jaycees of which he was a past President. He won both the Jaycees Keyman Award and the Kiwanis Club's Distinguished Service Award in 1954. He and his family moved to Norfolk, VA in 1959 were he was a long time member of Christ the King Catholic Church in Norfolk and helped out on occasion as an Usher. John worked for the Virginian-Pilot and Ledger-Star for 26 years. He won 7 awards for his advertisements and received a certificate of Achievement from the Virginian-Pilot and Ledger-Star in recognition of his successful completion of 26 years in Advertising upon his retirement in April, 1986. John and Alma helped with Meals on Wheels for 3 years after his retirement and visited 32 countries. The family will receive friends on Monday, January 8, 2018 from 1:00 to 2:30 p.m. at Smith & Williams Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel. Burial will follow at St. Mary's Catholic Church Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Foodbank of Southeastern Virginia and Eastern Shores, 800 Tidewater Drive, Norfolk, Virginia 23504.
