Mrs. Elizabeth Shields, 1665 Church street, died May 2 at her residence after a
brief illness. She was a native of Suffolk but had made her home here for many
years. She was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. James Smith. She was a
member of the House of Prayer No. 1. She was 73 years of age.

Mrs. Shields is survived by four sons, Emmett and Vincent Shields, both of
Norfolk; William Shields of New York City; and James Shields of Richmond; three
daughters, Mrs. Carrie Bailey and Mrs. Helen Brooks, both of Norfolk; and Mrs.
Alma Davis of New York City; 10 grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Pinkie
Batten and Mrs. Allie Ruffin, both of Norfolk.

Funeral services were conducted May 5 at 1 p.m., at the House of Prayer No. 1 by
Elder J. J. Williams, pastor. Burial was in Calvary Cemetery. Graves Funeral
Home in charge.
