Virginian-Pilot October 11, 1901
Mr. James Shirley, son of Mr. Robert A. and Mrs. Nettie Shirley, of this city, 
died of typhoid fever at St. Vincent’s Hospital yesterday afternoon after a brief 
illness. He was 18 years of age and not long since was in the United States Navy. 
His parents, who were desirous of his presence at home, ob¬tained his discharge, 
when he rejoined them in this city. The family removed here from Lexington several 
months ago. The funeral will take place at 12 o’clock today and will be conducted 
by Father Lynn. The interment will be in St. Mary’s cemetery.
