March 16, 2019 William Frederick Shofner, 91, of Virginia Beach, Virginia, passed away on March 14, 2019. He was born November 13, 1927 in Clovis, New Mexico to Frederick Merlin and Olga Ida (Goetze) Shofner and was married to Gertrude (Trudy) MacGillivray for 66 years. He was the last surviving sibling of one brother and four sisters: Daniel Shofner, Mary Roberts, Florence Scanlin, Theresa Bassett, and Thelma Shofner. Bill is survived by three children: Janet (Jim) Durham of Houston, Texas; Aleta (Tom) Winterling of Scottsdale, Arizona; and Mark (Sharon) Shofner of Virginia Beach, Virginia; thirteen grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. After high school, Bill went to southern California where he spent most of his adult life. He started out as an airplane mechanic in Long Beach, taking night school classes at local colleges while providing for his family. He continued working in the aviation industry as a draftsman and mechanical engineer for McDonnell Douglas Aircraft Company and others. He also worked in the oil and gas industry as a piping designer, spending time in Prudhoe Bay during construction of the Alaska Pipeline and the refineries of southern California. Bill liked camping, archery, a variety of martial arts – he was a 7th degree black belt in Aikido – and was a cartoonist. He was a do-it-yourselfer engaged in many handyman projects around the house. Bill and Trudy liked to see new things and were always taking the family on some outing. After he retired, Bill and Trudy moved to Parks, AZ, where he built his dream dome house. They eventually moved to Virginia Beach to be closer to family. The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Kempsville Chapel on Friday, April 26, 2019, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The funeral mass will be celebrated at the Catholic Church of Saint Mark on Saturday, April 27, 2019, at 11 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to the Alzheimer’s Association at https://www.alz.org/seva.
