Mr. Simmons was born in Charleston, S.C. He had retired from the National Maritime Union after 33 years. He was a member of the African Methodist Church, Charleston. He was a Navy veteran of World War II. Survivors include his wife, Mary Simmons; a daughter, Ruby Sauls of Fayetteville, N.C.; two sons, Christopher Simmons Jr. and Harry Simmons, both of Norfolk; his mother, Mary L. Stewart of Charleston; his father, Christopher Mims of Freeport, N.Y.; three sisters, Christina Mims and Juanita Bailey, both of Charleston, and Mary Stewart of Raleigh; a brother, Carl Mims of Freeport, Long Island, N.Y.; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Graves Funeral Home by the Rev. J.L. Kearney. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery . Friends may join the family at the residence.
