Virginian Pilot and The Norfolk Landmark August 1, 1935

Suffolk, July 31 -- News was received here today of the death this morning 
in the Dixie Hospital, Hampton, of Miss Ida M. Simmons, 58, a former 
resident of this city and a sister of G. Albert Simmons, of Suffolk.
Miss Simmons, who has been ill for some time was a native of Berkley, a 
charter member of Berkley Memorial Methodist Church, and was a daughter of 
the late G.A. Simmons, Sr. and Mrs. Martha Ward Simmons. 
Surviving her are a brother, G. Albert Simmons, Jr., of Suffolk; five 
nephews, Ward Simmons, of Roanoke; Wesley, Earle and Herbert Simmons, of 
Richmond and Clyde Simmons, of Suffolk and a niece, Miss Charlotte Simmons, 
of Suffolk.
Miss Simmons was a matron for several years at Driver Agricultural High 
School and played a heroic part when the dormitory of that institution 
burned several years ago, going from room to room to awaken the students, 
and finally escaped herself by jumping from a window.
Later she was matron at the S.P.C.C. Home in Norfolk and before her illness 
served as matron in the State Industrial School at Beaumont, of which Paul 
S. Blandford is superintendent.
The body will be taken to Berkley for funeral services Friday at 4 p.m. in 
Memorial Methodist Church, and burial in Magnolia Cemetery, Berkley.  Rev. 
Mr. Gresham will officiate.
Active pallbearers will be Claude Upton, C.L. Jones, John Frye, Linwood 
Borrowdale, Sidney Jones and Oma Parker.
