He was a native of Atlanta, Ga. where he attended schools and graduated from high school. He also attended Norfolk State College. He was one of the organizers of Covenant Presbyterian Church and served as an Elder and Sunday school teacher. He was formerly manager of several theatres in Norfolk and Portsmouth; was a housing manager of several developments with Norfolk Redevelopment Housing Authority; a salesman for several home improvement concerns; served as assistant district commissioner for Boy Scouts of America; served as President of Tidewater Bridge Unit, member of the Hunton Y.M.C.A.; and member of Tidewater Area Business League. When he was active, he volunteered as an active campaigner each year for the United Fund and the March of Dimes. He retired as an employment counselor of the Virginia Employment Commission. He leaves his wife of 54 years, Mrs. Clara Clapp Simmons; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. May C. Portlock and Mrs. Ellen C. Johnson of Norfolk; the Clapp Family and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held Saturday, at 11 a.m. in Covenant Presbyterian Church with Dr. Octavis A. Gaba officiating. Graves Funeral Home is in charge. Internment will be in Calvary Cemetery .
