Dr. Simmons was a member of the Norfolk State University faculty from September 1960 through June 1991 when he retired as professor of History. He was subsequently named Professor Emeritus of History by the NSU Board of Trustees. Dr. Simmons, a native of Liberty, Miss., was married and the father of three children. He was a graduate of Alcorn State University and received a Master and a Ph.D. degree in Latin American History from the University of Illinois. He also served as a sergeant major in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Before joining the Norfolk State faculty, Dr. Simmons had taught at Bluefield State University, Southern University, North Carolina A&T State University and Grambling State University. In 1970-71 he served as a Visiting Professor at The Johns Hopkins University. A daughter, Dr. Kay M. Simmons, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Margaret; a daughter, Lyn Simmons Jones; a son, Charles Willis III; a grandson, Jerrauld C.C. ``Jay'' Jones; son-in-law, Jerrauld C. Jones; sister-in-law, Mildred Washington of Philadelphia; and a mother-in-law, Geneva Norman. A funeral will be conducted at noon Tuesday at the Basilica of St. Mary. Interment will be Calvary Cemetery . Alpha Phi Alpha Omega Service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Riddick Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to First Union Bank, c/o the Charles W. Simmons History Scholarship.
