A native of Lincolton, Ga., Dr. Simmons was reared in Asheville, N .C. She was a wife and mother of three children. After graduating magna cum laude from Grambling State University and receiving a master's degree in English from Old Dominion University, Dr. Simmons earned a Ph.D. in English from the University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Simmons was a member of the Hampton University faculty from September 1968 until her death. She was a master teacher and in 1991 she was presented with the Christian R. and Mary F. Lindback Distinguished Teaching award. Currently, she was Avalon Professor of Humanities at the university. She served as the Chair of the University's Ceremonial Occasions Committee and faculty advisor to the Hampton Script. She was Chair of the University's Sexual Harrassment Committee and advisor to the Calliope Literary Society. As a scholar, she published works on Zora Neale Hurston, Mary Church Terrell, Ethel Waters and Sylvia Wallace Horton. Dr. Simmons also served as a consultant to the Educational Testing Service in Princeton, N .J., and the U.S. Office of Education. Dr. Simmons was a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., and the Holidays Inc. She served on the board of the Norfolk Senior Center. Her husband, Dr. Charles W. Simmons and a daughter, Dr. Kay M. Simmons preceded her in death. She is survived by a son, Charles Willis Simmons III; a daughter, Lyn M. Simmons Jones; a grandson, Jerrauld Charles Corey Jones; a sister, Mildred N . Washington of Philadelphia; son-in-law, Jerrauld C. Jones; nieces, nephews and many friends. A funeral will be held Monday at noon at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Hale Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Margaret N . Simmons Scholarship Fund at Hampton University.
