Among his many friends, he will be remembered as a shoe repairer, the trade in which he was engaged in most of his life. At an early age he was employed by Mr. J. J. Corprew. Later he worked for Mr. L. Sims. For a few years he was employed in a shop in the Arcade building. In 1918 Mr. Simmons went to Springfield MA to conduct a shop for the late Dr. Bowens. It was while he was in Springfield that Mr. Simmons contracted the malady which resulted in his death. He leaves to mourn his death three sisters: Miss Addie Simmons, with whom he lived,Miss Mary Simmons, and Mrs. Catherine Johnson, all of this city; two brothers-Mr. Arthur W. Simmons of New York City and Mr. Nat Simmons of New Haven CT; three aunts-Mrs. Maud Hall of New York City, Mrs. Louise Young of Portsmouth and Miss Fanny Diggs of Boston MA; three cousins, Mrs. Fanny (print smudged), Misses Margaret and Fraitus Young of Portsmouth; one niece, Miss Rosa Mae Simons of this city. Interment was in Calvary Cemetery.
