"Winks" Simpson, 91, died peacefully at his home the night of March 6, 2007. Winks was born in Norfolk, April 24, 1915, son of Waverly C. Simpson and Rosalene Foster Simpson. He was a descendent of Sir George Yardley, governor of Virginia in 1611. Winks was a life member of the Jamestown Society and was eligible to become a Son of the Revolution from both sides of his family. His family held many truck farms in what became the Southern Shopping Center area of Norfolk, while his mother later became director of the Dept. of Public Welfare of Princess Anne County. His grandfather, J.R. Simpson, lived in a house on the oceanfront at 23rd Street. Winks was a mine of stories of Old Norfolk County and early Virginia Beach. Graduating as an electrical engineer from North Carolina State in 1940, he worked for Carolina Power and Light at their hydro electric plant in Mount Gilead. After his brother, Foster, who was in the Merchant Marines, was torpedoed in Virginia waters during World War II, Winks worked for the Navy as a civilian in the newly developed radar testing and then as inspector of scientific naval material. Following the death of his first wife, Georgiana Davidson in 1949, Winks entered the hotel business. He built the Holiday House Motel, one of the first motels in Virginia Beach, located at the corner of 14th and Atlantic on the oceanfront near the fishing pier. During this time, he enjoyed winters in Mexico, where he met and married in 1968, his second wife, Elizabeth Rands, an Australian school teacher. Winks retired from the hotel business in 1975 to spend more time with his young family and to play with real estate. Winks is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his sons, David F. Simpson, licensed clinical social worker and Major Christopher R. Simpson, Chris' wife, Michele C. Simpson and their children, Joshua Paul and Hannah Marie Simpson. His funeral will be held at Old Donation Episcopal Church, 4449 N. Witchduck Road, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Canon Win Lewis and the Rev. Robert Randall will officiate. The service will be followed by a reception at the church with interment at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk afterwards. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Old Donation Episcopal Church. Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, is handling arrangements.
