"Winks" Simpson, 91, died peacefully at his home the night of March 6. 2007. Winks was born in Norfolk, April 24, 1915, son of Waverly C. Simpson and Rosalene Foster Simpson. Graduating as an electrical engineer from North Carolina State in 1940, he worked for Carolina Power and Light at their hydro electric plant in Mount Gilead. Later he worked for the Navy as a civilian in the newly developed radar testing and then as inspector of scientific naval material. Following the death of his first wife, Georgiana Davidson in 1949, Winks entered the hotel business. He built the Holiday House Motel, located at the corner of 14th and Atlantic on the oceanfront. He met and married, in 1968, his second wife, Elizabeth Rands, an Australian school teacher. He retired from the hotel business in 1975. Winks is survived by his wife, Elizabeth; his sons, David F. Simpson, licensed clinical social worker and Major Christopher R. Simpson, Chris' wife, Michele C. Simpson and their children, Joshua Paul and Hannah Marie Simpson. His funeral will be held at Old Donation Episcopal Church, 4449 N. Witchduck Road, at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. The Rev. Canon Win Lewis and the Rev. Robert Randall will officiate. The service will be followed by a reception at the church with interment at Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk afterwards. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to Old Donation Episcopal Church.
