Singleton of New Road slipped quietly into the Master's arms on Thursday, March 8, 2007, surrounded by her loving and devoted family. Born in Jacksonville, Fla., Nov. 8, 1941, Louise was an only child who was educated in the public school system in Jacksonville. The years at New Stanton Senior High School found her very active in the Debating Club and the Honor Society. She matriculated at Bethune-Cookman College in Daytona Beach, Fla., and achieved a B.S. in social sciences. On Dec. 24, 1960, she married Arthur, her high school sweetheart. Of that union they were blessed with a son, Terence and a daughter, Arlette. Louise was employed in the Department of Aging in the City of New York and also for a time as a substitute teacher for the Catholic Diocese of Brooklyn. In 1984, the family relocated to Holland, Va., and became members of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception in Norfolk. Some of the organizations that Louise dedicated her time and talent to were Delta Sigma Theta Inc. since 1960, a former Grand Lady and Area Deputy of the Knights of Peter Claver, Ladies' Auxiliary, the Red Hat Society, a Life Member of the NAACP and the Life Membership Chair of the Suffolk-Nansemond Branch of the NAACP. Louise was preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Malissa Raymond and her son, Terence M. Singleton. Left to cherish her memory are her devoted husband of 46 years, Arthur L. Singleton; daughter, Arlette L. Douglas; grandson, Jason L. Douglas; granddaughter, Jasmyne M. Douglas; favorite aunt, Rena O. Gaffney; first cousins, Geraldine Smalls, Westina Owens and Minnie McDaniels; and a host of relatives and friends. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 6:30 until 8 p.m. at the Wm. M. Johnson & Sons Funeral Home Inc., 224 South Main St., Franklin. The Mass of Resurrection will be held at noon Wednesday at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception, 232 Chapel St., Norfolk. The interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Norfolk.
