W. A. SLAYMAKER DEAD This Prominent Divine Passed Away Suddenly Yesterday Yesterday morning the people of this community were greatly shocked by the announcement of the death of the Rev. William A. Slaymaker, who passed away at the manse of Armstrong Memorial Presbyterian Church, of which he was pastor. The cause of his death was heart disease, of which he had been a sufferer for several years. Mr. Slaymaker was taken ill very suddenly yesterday morning about half-past 1 o'clock and was attended by Dr. J.A. Norfleet, who, with the assistance of Mr. Amos Slaymaker, a nephew of the deceased, made him as comfortable as possible. At about 6 o'clock the attack was followed by another, and this proved fatal before a physician arrived. Mr. Slaymaker was held high in the esteem of all who knew him. His kindly manner and bearing, his exemplary life as a Christian, with a charitable nature and a love for his fellow man, gave him a place in the hearts of all in this community. The deceased was born in Lancaster county, Pa. in 1839. His parents were William D. and Elizabeth Slaymaker. In the year 1879 he entered the ministry and since that time he had charge of churches in a number of the Southern States until he came to this place, where he served eight years and one month. He was a member of the Otey Battery, of Richmond and was with his command from the beginning to the end of the Civil War. Mr. Slaymaker was a prominent Mason and belonged to Berkley Lodge No. 167, A.F. & A.M. and was chaplain of Thomas Jefferson Council No. 109 , Jr. O.U.A.M., and a member of Niemeyer-Shaw Camp, Confederate Veterans, of this place. One sister, Mrs. J.D. Gilliagham of Bucks county, Pa., his wife, who was Miss Gluyss, of Alexandria, and two daughters, Mrs. Charles E. Wicks and Miss Elizabeth Slaymaker, of this place, survive him. His funeral services will be conducted from the Presbyterian church tomorrow at 3:30 o'clock. The services will be conducted by the Rev. E.B. McCluer, assisted by the Revs. Gatewood, Thacker and Maxwell, of Norfolk The interment will be made in Magnolia cemetery. ******************************************** Excerpt from funeral notice - Virginian Pilot February 4, 1902 The services were conducted by Rev. Thacker, pastor of the Second Presbyterian Church, Norfolk, Rev. B.D. Tucker, rector of St. Pauls P.E Church, Norfolk, Rev. C.W. Maxwell, pastor of Colley Memorial Church, Atlantic City and Rev. A.R. Shaw, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church, Portsmouth.
