A Norfolk native and lifelong bachelor, E.K., as he was known to his family and friends, was born on Sept. 11, 1906. He was the son of the late Florence Knapp Sloane and William Sloane, founders of the Hermitage Foundation Museum and the Norfolk Museum of Arts and Sciences, predecessor of the Chrysler Museum. The brother of the late William Sloane Jr., E.K. was the last direct member of the Norfolk Sloane family. E.K. was tutored privately, traveled abroad extensively and went off to England's Brasenose College, Oxford University in his teens and was awarded a B.S. degree in engineering in 1929. In 1931, he earned a master of science degree from Harvard University in electrical engineering. He returned to Norfolk and managed various family enterprises, particularly the Wainwright Building in downtown Norfolk, which he and his brother ultimately sold in the 1960s. E.K. became director of the Hermitage Foundation Museum around 1955 and retired from that position in 1973. His naval career during World War II culminated in a citation from President Franklin D. Roosevelt for his successfully expediting the construction and delivery of 750 minesweeper ships from 1942 to 1944 which were needed in the war effort. He left active service in the U.S. Navy in 1946 as a commander in the U.S. Naval Reserve. To a number of area people, E.K. was known primarily as a supporter and patron of the arts. Among his many gifts to the arts are concert grand pianos, of which he gave a sizable number to colleges, universities and symphony orchestras. Pre-planned funeral arrangements are coordinated by E.K.'s closest family friends, Marcia and C.J. Lindemann of Norfolk. A chapel service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 21, 1997, in H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartments, Norfolk Chapel by the Rev. James W.H. Sell. Interment will follow at Elmwood Cemetery. There will be a visitation Tuesday evening, 7 to 8 p.m. in the funeral home.
