Norfolk Virginian Pilot November 21, 1953


Charles Smallwood, 72, husband of Mrs. Marie Cariani Smallwood and son of John 
and Mrs. Ann Ruffin Smallwood, died yesterday at 2 p.m. at a Norfolk hospital.
Mr. Smallwood was a native of Bertie County, N.C. and had been a resident of 
Norfolk for 55 years, residing at 206 Botetourt Apartments, 500 Botetourt 
Street, at the time of his death. He was employed by the Virginia Electric and 
Power Co. for 45 years, for 25 years as inspector, retiring in 1949.
Besides his wife, Mrs. Marie Cariani Smallwood, of Norfolk, he is survived by 
one sister, Mrs. A.A. Bryan, of Rich Square, N.C. and a number of nieces and 
nephews.
The body was removed to the H.D. Oliver Funeral Apartment, pending arrangements.

Charles Smallwood — Funeral services for Mr. Smallwood, who died Friday at a 
local hospital, were held at the H. D. Oliver Funeral Apartments yesterday 
morning by the Rev. W. H. Garman, pastor of the People’s Church, Norview. Burial 
was in St. Mary’s Cemetery. The pallbearers were Jesse L. Thomas, W. F. 
Jernigan, J. F. Garris, K. W. Hodges, A. Johnson and A. R. Roebuck.
