Virginian Pilot and The Norfolk Landmark February 26, 1918

Walter Forbes Smiley, one of Norfolk's oldest native sons, whose long life had 
been spent in this city, where he was widely known, died last evening after a 
long illness, at his residence, 504 Colonial Avenue, in the 75th year of his 
age.  He is survived by a sister, Miss Mary E. Smiley, of Norfolk and a brother, 
Charles D. Smiley, of St. Louis.  Mr. Smiley was the son of the late James and 
Elizabeth Hallowell Smiley, of this city.

The funeral of Walter Forbes Smiley will be held Thursday at 12 o'clock at the 
residence, 504 Colonial Avenue, and will be conducted by Rev. H.H. Covington, of 
St. Paul's Church and Rev. Stuart Nye Hutchinson of the First Presbyterian 
Church.  Interment will be in Elmwood.
