Southern Argus, January 29, 1857
DEATH OF AN AGED AND ESTEEMED CITIZEN.- We are called upon to record the 
decease of another of our best citizens, MR. JAMES SMILEY, Sr.

For nearly half a century Mr. S. has resided in this community, where, by his 
friendly disposition, correct deportment, unpresuming manners, and entire 
rectitude of conduct, he received, as he deserved, the highest respect and 
esteem of all who knew him.

In the proper discharge of his duty to his fellow creatures he forgot not the 
claims of his Creator. At all times, and during his last illness in 
particular, he recognized and was sustained by the hand of Him to whose cause, 
fully 49 years ago, in the Presbyterian Church, he declared his attachment and 
determination to live.

We mingle our heartfelt sympathies in behalf of the family this visitation has 
so sadly afflicted.


Additional Comments:
January 27 or 28 is very likely the day of death as there is no day recorded 
elsewhere.
