CHESAPEAKE - Mrs. Laura Hassell Smith, 79, of 2701 Border Road, died Saturday in 
a hospital.
A native of Cherry, N.C., she had lived in this area 47 years. She was a member 
of St. Mary’s Catholic Church.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Mildred Smith Poole of Norfolk, Mrs. 
Elsie Smith Jones and Mrs. Sylvia Smith Brown, both of Chesapeake; five sons, 
Charles Marshall Smith of Virginia Beach, Gerald Eugene Smith of Chesapeake, 
Cyril Lawrence Smith of Norfolk, Marvin Edmond Smith of Surry and Richard 
Preston Smith of Weleka, Fla.; 52 grandchildren; and 29 great-grandchildren.
A funeral will be held Monday at 11 a.m. in St. Matthew’s Catholic Church by the 
Rev Fr. Timothy Drake. Burial will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Norfolk. A 
Christian Wake service will be held tonight at 7 at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, 
Indian River Chapel.
