SMITH, LONG A MERCHANT IN NORFOLK, DIES Bronchitis Cause of Death of Member of Firm of Smith & Welton NATIVE OF IRELAND; CAME TO U.S. IN 1848 Funeral Service at 10 a.m. Tomorrow At Sacred Heart Church Cosmas F. Smith, of the firm of Smith and Welton and one of the best known business men of Norfolk, died yesterday morning at his home, 423 Olney Road. Bronchitis was the cause of his death. He was 76 years old. Mr. Smith was one of the oldest merchants in the city, having been in business for about sixty years. He was born in County Tyrone, Ireland, and came to the United States as a small boy, in 1848. He graduated from Fordham University, Fordham, N.Y., at the time of the Civil War. Coming to Norfolk he joined his brother, Peter Smith, in the firm of Peter Smith and Company. About twenty years ago Mr. Smith became a member of the firm of Smith and Welton, later Smith and Welton, Incorporated. Mr. Smith is survived by one daughter, Miss Lucia Deveraux Smith, of Norfolk and by his brother, Peter Smith, who still conducts the firm of Peter Smith and Company, at 416 East Main Street. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. The funeral will take place at 10 o'clock tomorrow morning at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be private.
